World Suicide Prevention and Awareness Day
·
mental health suicide prevention awareness
Today is heavy. Since 2021, I’ve lost two close friends — Pete Scott and Andrei Miulescu — both brilliant, talented men in their early 30s. I think of them every day. The phone calls that followed… I wouldn’t wish those on anyone.
The statistics
- Suicide is the 11th leading cause of death in the US
- In 2022, 49,476 Americans died by suicide
- Men died by suicide nearly 4x more often than women
- Firearms accounted for 54% of deaths
- In New Zealand, youth suicide rates are among the highest in the OECD. Men are more than twice as likely to die by suicide than women.
Connection is survival
Connection is not a luxury. It’s survival. Friends. Family. Community. Just being seen, heard, understood.
If you’re struggling: You are not alone. You are never a burden. You are needed.
